In just the latest in a string of horrific “honor” killings – crimes of violence carried out against Muslim for real and imagined trespasses against her family, a pregnant woman in Jordan had both her throat and stomach slit open. Authorities suspect the woman may have been slain as her child was conceived outside of marriage.

Even more horrific, the woman’s body was then dumped in a garbage container and set ablaze. Her four-month-old fetus was clearly visible to those who discovered her.

Police discovered her charred remains at dawn in Ruseifa, east of Amman over the past weekend.

“We believe it was an honor crime,” a police spokesman said.

“The belly of the woman, in her twenties, was cut open and we could see her four-month-old unborn child, who was dead too. Investigations are still under way,” he added.

The Jordan Times reported that “the fact [...] her stomach was cut open is a strong indication that she was killed for reasons related to family honor.”

Witnesses said they saw two men, driving a truck, pull up to the dumpster before throwing in the body and setting it on fire with a flammable liquid.

Criminal Court Prosecutor Qahtan Qawaqzeh on Monday questioned three brothers who reportedly murdered their married sister earlier in the day in the latest so-called honour killing to take place in the Kingdom this year, official sources said.

The three suspects, residents of Ruseifa, 15 kilometres east of Amman, were apprehended by authorities shortly after arriving at the police station claiming that one of them “stabbed his sibling to death at her home in the capital’s Shmeisani neighbourhood to cleanse his family’s honour”, a senior police official said.

“Investigators were not convinced by their story and decided to detain all three brothers for questioning,” the source told The Jordan Times.

In their initial testimony to the police and Qawaqzeh, the suspects said “they received information that their sister, who was married to an Arab national, was involved in an immoral relationship and decided to come to Amman to discuss the matter with her”, the source said.

When the brothers entered their sister’s house, one of them stabbed her with a knife 17 times to different parts of her body, according to the suspects’ initial confessions.

The victim was the third woman to be killed for reasons related to family honour in Jordan in less than a week.

On October 31, a 56-year-old man reportedly strangled his 22-year-old daughter with his hands at his home in Zarqa, 22 kilometres east of the capital, following an argument related to her “alleged immoral behaviour”.

 A Jordanian man was charged on Wednesday with killing his divorced sister after stabbing her and driving his truck over her body several times because of her alleged “suspicious behavior,” police said.

“The suspect, in his forties, was charged with premeditated murder after confessing to the crime, claiming his divorced sister had indulged in suspicious behavior,” a police spokesman told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The crime took place early on Wednesday in the northern Greco-Roman city of Jerash.

“The man stabbed the woman and then took her to a deserted area where he repeatedly ran over her body to make sure she was dead,” the spokesman said.

Murder is punishable by death in Jordan, but in so-called “honor killings,” courts can commute or reduce sentences, particularly if the victim’s family asks for leniency.

Wonder what her suspicious behavior was?  Wearing makeup?  Not wearing the hijab or letting it fall and showing too much hair?  Going out in public with out a chaperone?  Talking to a man who’s not her relative?  Or horrors of all horrors, holding hands with a man?
