Libyan Husbands Can Now Practice Sharia Polygamy

Groom and two bridesTime for men in Libya to look for a second wife as the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court in the country abolished an old amendment that required men to have their first wife consent to them marrying a second one, according to AFP.

The previous Qaddafi regime requirement for a second marriage included written consent from the first wife and the man’s financial ability to be able to cater to both wives.

According to Sharia law, men don’t have to have any consent from anyone to take a second wife.  Or a third, or a fourth.

Libyan Women Will Have Only 10% Representation in Government Assembly

Libyan Women Not Seeing Electoral Gains in Arab SpringTen percent of the seats in a proposed Libyan constituent assembly will be reserved for women, a draft electoral law published on Monday said, triggering harsh reaction from a human rights watchdog.

The Libyan Human Rights Alliance strongly criticised the proposed bill.

“As it is now, Libyan women currently make up over 50% of the population in Libya, and the idea that they will be strictly limited to only 20 seats is extremely outrageous,” said the alliance in a statement released in English.
